A bold and flavorful lentil dish with a fiery tempering — perfect with rice or roti.
🧂 Ingredients:
For the Dal:
1/2 cup toor dal (arhar dal)
1 3/4 cups water
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
Salt to taste
For the Spicy Tadka (Tempering):
2 tbsp ghee or oil
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
2–3 dry red chillies
5–6 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 green chilli, slit
1/2 tsp red chilli powder
1/4 tsp hing (asafoetida)
8–10 curry leaves
1 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped
👩🍳 Instructions:
Step 1: Cook the Dal
Rinse the toor dal and pressure cook it with turmeric, salt, and water for 3–4 whistles (or simmer in a pot until soft).
Mash the dal slightly and keep warm.
Step 2: Prepare the Spicy Tadka
Heat ghee or oil in a small pan.
Add mustard seeds and let them splutter, then add cumin seeds.
Add dry red chillies, sliced garlic, and sauté until garlic turns golden.
Add onion and green chilli, and cook until onions are soft and light golden.
Stir in red chilli powder, hing, and curry leaves. Cook for a few seconds.
Step 3: Assemble
Pour the hot tadka directly into the cooked dal.
Mix well and simmer the dal for 2–3 minutes to let the flavors infuse.
Step 4: Garnish
Top with chopped coriander and a final drizzle of ghee (optional).
