A crispy and aromatic pan-fried fish coated in a punchy masala – perfect as a starter or side.
🐟 Ingredients (Serves 3–4)
500g fish fillets or steaks (pomfret, seer, mackerel, tilapia – any firm fish)
2 tbsp rice flour or semolina (rava) – for crispiness
2–3 tbsp oil – for shallow frying
Lemon wedges and onion rings – for serving
🌶️ For the Marinade:
1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
1 tsp red chili powder
½ tsp Kashmiri chili powder (for vibrant color)
½ tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp coriander powder
½ tsp black pepper powder
½ tsp garam masala (optional)
1 tsp lemon juice or ½ tsp vinegar
Salt to taste
Water – just a few teaspoons to make a thick paste
🍳 Instructions
Step 1: Prep & Marinate the Fish
Wash and pat dry the fish pieces.
In a bowl, mix all marinade ingredients to form a thick paste.
Rub the marinade generously over the fish pieces, coating them well.
Set aside for 30 minutes to 1 hour for deeper flavor.
Step 2: Coat & Fry
Just before frying, sprinkle rice flour or rava on both sides of the fish for a crispy texture.
Heat oil in a flat pan or tawa over medium heat.
Gently place the marinated fish pieces on the pan. Fry 3–5 minutes per side until crispy and golden.
Flip only once or twice to avoid breaking the fish.
Step 3: Serve Hot
Remove from pan and drain on paper towels.
Serve hot with onion rings, lemon wedges, and a sprinkle of chat masala (optional).
🍽️ Serving Ideas:
Great as a starter, snack, or side dish with dal and rice.
Pairs wonderfully with coconut chutney, mint chutney, or tamarind sauce.
💡 Tips:
For extra zing, add a pinch of ajwain (carom seeds) to the marinade.
Use mustard oil or coconut oil for regional variations.
Can be air-fried or grilled with a brush of oil for a healthier twist.
