1 cup whole or split masoor dal (red lentils)
1 medium onion, chopped
1 medium tomato, chopped
1–2 green chillies, slit or chopped
1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp red chilli powder (adjust to taste)
1 tsp coriander powder
Salt to taste
1 tbsp ghee or oil
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
3 cups water (adjust for desired consistency)
Fresh coriander leaves, chopped (for garnish)
Juice of 1/2 lemon (optional)
👩🍳 Instructions:
Step 1: Rinse & Prep
Rinse the masoor dal thoroughly in water until it runs clear. Set aside.
Step 2: Cook in One Pot
In a pressure cooker or heavy-bottomed pot, heat ghee or oil.
Add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Add a pinch of hing.
Add onions and sauté until translucent.
Add green chillies, ginger-garlic paste, and sauté for a minute.
Add tomatoes, turmeric, chilli powder, and coriander powder. Cook until tomatoes soften.
Add the rinsed masoor dal, salt, and 3 cups of water. Mix well.
Step 3: Pressure Cook or Simmer
If using a pressure cooker, cook for 2–3 whistles on medium heat.
If using a pot, cover and simmer for 25–30 minutes until dal is soft and creamy, stirring occasionally and adding water if needed.
Step 4: Garnish & Serve
Open the lid carefully. Stir and mash lightly if desired.
Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and a squeeze of lemon juice.
